ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै महालक्ष्म्यै नमः॥
ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः॥
— Mahalakshmi Beej Mantra
"Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Mahalakshmyai Namah / Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah" — Salutations to the Great Goddess Lakshmi, source of all wealth, beauty and auspiciousness. Begin every Diwali puja by chanting this 11 or 108 times.
Why this Diwali feels different (and why your calendar isn't wrong)
If you have already pulled out the family Panchang and double-checked the date three times, you are not alone. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November — almost three weeks later than the 21 October date we had in 2025. Customers walking into Divine Hindu Store in Jayanagar 3rd Block East have been asking the same question for weeks: "Why is Diwali so late this year?"
The short answer is one Sanskrit phrase: Adhik Maas. Below we explain what it means, then walk you through the complete Lakshmi Puja Vidhi for Diwali 2026 — Pradosh Kaal muhurat, the 5-day festival calendar, the full samagri checklist, the diya lighting plan, and the mantras to chant. Everything you need to perform a proper, shastra-aligned Diwali puja at home. As always, every brass deepak, kalash and idol we mention is available at our Govt. Certified showroom in Jayanagar, Bengaluru.
The Adhik Maas Explainer: Why Diwali 2026 is on Nov 8 (not late October)
The Hindu calendar is luni-solar — months are tracked by the moon (about 354 days a year), but festivals are kept aligned to the sun's seasons (365.25 days). That 11-day annual gap would, untreated, drift Diwali into the monsoon within a decade. To correct it, the shastras prescribe inserting an extra lunar month roughly every 32–33 months. This intercalary month is called Adhik Maas (also Mal Maas or Purushottam Maas).
In 2026, Adhik Maas falls between 17 May and 15 June, sitting as a second Jyeshtha month. Because it is inserted before the festival half of the year, every festival from Guru Purnima onwards shifts later by approximately 19–20 days. That is why:
- Ganesh Chaturthi moved from late August to 14 September 2026
- Navaratri begins on 11 October 2026 (vs late September 2025)
- And Diwali (Amavasya of Kartik) lands on Sunday, 8 November 2026
This is not an error in your calendar — it is the calendar working exactly as it was designed by Vedic astronomers two millennia ago. The next time Diwali will fall in early November will be 2029; usually we will be back to mid-to-late October from 2027 onwards.
Diwali 2026: The Complete 5-Day Festival Calendar
Diwali is not a single day — it is a five-day sequence of festivals. Here is the full timetable for 2026:
| Date | Day | Festival | Significance | Key Ritual |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 Nov 2026 | Friday | Dhanteras (Dhanvantri Trayodashi) | Worship of Lord Dhanvantri (Ayurveda) and Goddess Lakshmi; entry of wealth into the home. | Buy gold, silver, brass utensils or a new broom. Light 13 diyas at dusk; place one near the south-facing door for Yamadeep. |
| 7 Nov 2026 | Saturday | Choti Diwali (Narak Chaturdashi / Roop Chaudas) | Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura; symbolic removal of inner negativity. | Abhyanga snan (oil bath) at brahma muhurat. Light 5 diyas in the evening, one of which is for departed ancestors. |
| 8 Nov 2026 | Sunday | Diwali / Lakshmi Puja (Kartik Amavasya) | Main day. Goddess Mahalakshmi enters every clean, well-lit home on this night to bless prosperity. | Lakshmi-Ganesh Puja during Pradosh Kaal (approx 5:30–7:30 PM IST). Light 21+ diyas, draw rangoli at the entrance. |
| 9 Nov 2026 | Monday | Govardhan Puja (Annakut) | Krishna lifted Govardhan hill to protect Vrindavan; gratitude for nature and food. | Build a Govardhan from cow dung or rice; prepare 56-bhog (annakut) for the deity. |
| 10 Nov 2026 | Tuesday | Bhai Dooj (Yama Dwitiya) | Bond between brothers and sisters; Yamuna welcoming her brother Yama. | Sister applies tilak on brother's forehead, performs aarti, exchanges gifts and sweets. |

Lakshmi Puja Muhurat: When to Perform the Puja on 8 November 2026
Why Pradosh Kaal? Because Goddess Lakshmi is Sthira (stable) in the evening twilight when the lagna is fixed (Vrishabha, a sthir rashi). A puja performed in this window invites permanent prosperity, not fleeting wealth — the very heart of why Diwali Lakshmi Puja is timed at dusk and not at midnight.

Step-by-Step Lakshmi Puja Vidhi During Pradosh Kaal (8 Nov 2026)
Begin the puja at approximately 5:30 PM IST. Bathe, wear fresh (preferably red, pink or yellow) clothes, and ensure the puja room and entire home are spotlessly clean — Lakshmi enters only where there is light and cleanliness.
-
Step 1 — Sankalp (Intention setting)
Sit facing east or north. Sprinkle water around your asan. Take a few drops of water in your right palm, mention your name, gotra, today's date (8 November 2026, Kartik Amavasya, Vikram Samvat 2083), and resolve: "I perform this Lakshmi-Ganesh puja for the prosperity, health and wellbeing of my family." Release the water on the ground.
-
Step 2 — Ganesh Vandana
Always start with Ganesha. Offer durva, akshat and a red flower to the Ganesh idol while chanting: "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah" 11 or 21 times. Light a small ghee diya in front of him.
-
Step 3 — Kalash Sthapana
Place the brass/copper kalash filled with water on a bed of akshat. Add a coin, a betel nut and a small flower into the water. Cover the mouth with five mango leaves and a coconut wrapped in red cloth. Chant "Om Varunaya Namah" while installing.
-
Step 4 — Lakshmi Avahan (Invocation)
With folded hands, invite the Goddess: "Aagachha Aagachha Devi, Mahalakshmi Namostute". Place the Lakshmi idol on the red cloth chowki, slightly to the right of Ganesh. Place Kuber yantra and Shree yantra in front.
-
Step 5 — Panchamrit Abhishek & Shringar
Bathe the idol gently with panchamrit, then pure water. Wipe dry with a clean cloth. Apply tilak of haldi-kumkum, offer akshat, dress the idol with new red or yellow cloth, and garland with lotus and marigold.
-
Step 6 — Naivedya (Food offering)
Offer sweets, fruits, batasha, kheer and 5 paan leaves with supari. Place new coins and currency notes in front of the idol — these become "shri" prasad and stay in your locker for the year.
-
Step 7 — Mantra Japa
Chant the Mahalakshmi Beej Mantra 108 times on a kamalgatta or sphatik mala: "Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah". Follow with Shri Suktam or Lakshmi Chalisa. This is the spiritual core of the entire puja — do not rush this step.
-
Step 8 — Deep Daan & Aarti
Light all 21+ diyas now — first the ghee diya in front of Lakshmi, then spread oil diyas across the puja room, entrance, balcony and rangoli. Perform Om Jai Lakshmi Mata aarti with the lit karpoor on the aarti thali. Ring the ghanti, blow the shankh.
-
Step 9 — Kshama Prarthana & Prasad Distribution
Ask forgiveness for any mistakes in vidhi or mantra: "Aavahanam Na Janami, Na Janami Visarjanam. Kshamasva Parameshwari". Distribute prasad to every family member. Keep one ghee diya burning by the Lakshmi idol through the night.
The Diwali Diya Lighting Plan: Where to Place 42 Diyas in Your Home
Light after the Lakshmi Puja aarti is complete, while the family stands together. Suggested plan for a typical 2BHK / 3BHK Bengaluru apartment:
- Puja room — 21 diyas: 1 large ghee diya in front of Lakshmi, 4 around the chowki, 16 in a square outline around the puja shelf.
- Main entrance — 5 diyas: 2 on each side of the door, 1 above the threshold (placed on a small wall niche or pedestal).
- Balcony — 5 diyas: arranged in a row on the railing edge (use weighted brass diyas, not earthen, if it is windy).
- Rangoli at entrance — 11 diyas: on the rangoli border, alternating with lotus petals.
That totals 42 diyas — the auspicious number which is twice the 21 we always light in the puja room. Keep at least one diya alive through the entire night; tradition holds that the moment it extinguishes is the moment Lakshmi sits in your home.

The Entrance Is the Most Important Part — Don't Skip the Rangoli
Mahalakshmi traditionally enters through a clean, decorated front door. Whatever else you simplify this year, do not skip these three at the entrance:
- Rangoli with a lotus motif — lotus is Lakshmi's own asana.
- Toran of mango leaves and marigold — tied above the door frame on the morning of Nov 8.
- Two lit diyas + Lakshmi charan (footprint stickers/stencils) pointing into the home.
The Festival Year So Far — And Why Continuity Matters
If you have followed our 2026 festival series — from Ganesh Chaturthi (14 September) through Navaratri (October) — you will notice the same Adhik Maas explanation has applied to every festival. The same Ganesha you welcomed home in September is the same Ganesha you invoke first in this Lakshmi Puja. The puja shelf, the brass diyas, the kalash — reuse them. Each festival adds to a continuous spiritual rhythm at home.
5 Common Diwali Puja Mistakes to Avoid in 2026
- Performing puja at midnight, not Pradosh Kaal. Mahanishita Kaal is only for tantric upasana; for a household Lakshmi Puja, Pradosh (5:30–7:30 PM) is the correct window.
- Idol facing south or west. Always east or north. North is preferred for prosperity (Kuber's direction).
- Skipping Ganesha. No puja begins without Ganesh vandana — he is the vighnaharta.
- Letting the ghee diya extinguish during the night. Keep extra ghee & wicks nearby; refill if needed.
- Buying a new broom on Diwali day. Buy the new jhaadu on Dhanteras (6 Nov), but use it for the first time on the morning of 9 November (post-Diwali) — this represents sweeping out daridra.

Frequently Asked Questions — Diwali 2026
Why is Diwali on November 8 in 2026?
Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November because the Hindu luni-solar calendar inserted an extra lunar month called Adhik Maas between 17 May and 15 June 2026. Adhik Maas is added approximately every 32–33 months to keep lunar festivals aligned with the solar year. Because it was inserted before the festival half of the year, every major Hindu festival from Guru Purnima onwards shifted later by roughly 19–20 days. Diwali is always celebrated on Kartik Amavasya (the new moon of Kartik), and in 2026 that Amavasya tithi falls on Sunday, 8 November. This is not a calendar error — it is the Vedic system working correctly.
What is the Lakshmi Puja muhurat for Diwali 2026?
The main Lakshmi Puja muhurat for Diwali 2026 falls during Pradosh Kaal, approximately 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM IST on Sunday, 8 November 2026. The most auspicious sub-window is Vrishabha Lagna (approx 5:45 PM – 7:45 PM), which is a sthir (fixed) zodiac and considered ideal for invoking Sthira Lakshmi (stable, permanent prosperity). For tantric or shakta-style puja, Mahanishita Kaal around 11:30 PM – 12:30 AM is used instead. Timings vary by city based on sunset, so verify the exact times with your local pandit. Our priests at Divine Hindu Store, Jayanagar share the exact Bengaluru muhurat free with every puja kit.
What is the complete samagri list for Diwali 2026?
A complete Diwali 2026 Lakshmi Puja samagri list includes: (1) a Lakshmi-Ganesh idol pair, (2) minimum 21 brass diyas, (3) cow ghee and sesame/mustard oil, (4) cotton wicks, (5) a kalash with mango leaves and coconut, (6) lotus and marigold flowers, (7) panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar), (8) kumkum, haldi, chandan and akshat, (9) new coins and currency notes, (10) sweets and fruits, (11) rangoli powder, (12) agarbatti, dhoop and karpoor, (13) red cloth and wooden chowki, (14) Kuber and Shree yantras, and (15) aarti thali, ghanti and shankh.
