Invocation: Vakratunda Mahakaya

वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ।
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥

Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha,
Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarvakaryeshu Sarvada.

Translation: "O Lord with the curved trunk and mighty body, radiant as a million suns — please remove all obstacles from every undertaking of mine, always." This is the most popular Ganesha invocation across India and is traditionally chanted before beginning any puja, journey, exam or new venture.

1. Why Ganesh Chaturthi matters: the birthday of Vighnaharta

Ganesh Chaturthi (also called Vinayaka Chaturthi in South India and Ganeshotsav in Maharashtra) celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha — the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, the remover of obstacles (Vighnaharta) and the first deity invoked in any Hindu ritual. Born on the Shukla Chaturthi of the Bhadrapada month, he is believed to descend to earth on this day and stay with his devotees through the festival until visarjan (immersion).

Regionally, the festival has two great expressions:

  • Maharashtra (the Lokmanya Tilak tradition since 1893): grand 1.5 / 5 / 7 / 10-day public & home pandals, modak as the chief naivedya, energetic "Ganpati Bappa Morya" processions for visarjan.
  • Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra (Vinayaka Chaturthi): intimate 1-day or 1.5-day home puja, kozhukattai / modaka with jaggery-coconut filling, 21 durva blades offered, often clay idols immersed at home in a bucket. In Bengaluru specifically, both styles co-exist beautifully — Karnataka families do a serene morning puja, Marathi households host 5-day Ganpati, and many homes now choose the eco-friendly route. Divine Hindu Store, Jayanagar stocks for both traditions.

2. Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 Date & Muhurat

Detail Timing (IST)
Festival date Sunday, 14 September 2026
Chaturthi Tithi begins ~ 13 Sep 2026, evening (Tritiya–Chaturthi sandhi)
Chaturthi Tithi ends ~ 14 Sep 2026, late evening
Madhyahna Muhurat (best for Sthapana) ~ 11:00 AM – 1:30 PM (≈ 2.5 hours)
Avoid: Chandra Darshan Do not look at the moon on the evening of 14 Sep (Mithya Dosha)
Bengaluru regional note South Indian families may also begin between 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM after morning bath & cleaning

Why Madhyahna? Ganesha is believed to have been born during the Madhyahna kaal (midday). Installing his idol in this window aligns the puja with his janma muhurat. Always cross-check the exact minute for your pincode on authentic Hindu panchangam sources a day before — tithi timings shift slightly each year and by city longitude.

4. Choosing the right Ganesha idol for your home

Eco-friendly clay vs PoP — please choose clay

Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols do not dissolve in water and poison our lakes — including Bengaluru's Madiwala, Yediyur and Sankey tanks. The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board has actively discouraged PoP since 2021. Natural mitti (clay) idols, painted with vegetable/turmeric/geru colours, dissolve cleanly within hours in a home bucket. Divine Hindu Store stocks only natural clay and shadu mitti idols sourced from artisan clusters in Pen (Maharashtra) and Channapatna (Karnataka).

Size for a Bengaluru apartment mandir

  • 4"–6": ideal for 2 BHK home mandir / wall-shelf mandap.
  • 7"–9": for a dedicated puja room or hall corner.
  • 10"+ & above: only for community/society pandals — visarjan logistics matter.

Posture & symbolism (what to look for)

  • Lalitasana (seated, one leg folded): calmness, ideal for home daily worship.
  • Trunk curved to the left (Vamamukhi): most common, brings peace & family harmony.
  • Trunk curved to the right (Dakshinmukhi / Siddhi Vinayak): more powerful, stricter puja niyam required.
  • Standing Ganesha: for new ventures & business openings.

5. Sthapana Vidhi — Step-by-step installation on 14 Sep 2026

Begin during Madhyahna muhurat. Bathe, wear clean cotton clothes (yellow / red preferred), and have the entire samagri spread ready.

  1. Sankalpa (intention-setting): Sit facing east, take water + akshat + a flower in your right palm. State your name, gotra, place, date, and resolve: "I am performing Ganesh Sthapana for the wellbeing of my family." Release into a copper plate.
  2. Kalash Sthapana: Place the brass kalash filled with water, 5 mango leaves at the rim and a coconut wrapped in red cloth on top — to the right of the idol's chowki. Chant: "Om Ganapataye Namah."
  3. Idol installation: Wipe the idol with a clean wet cloth, place on the chowki over a red/yellow cloth, facing east or north-east. Tie a janeu (sacred thread) if your tradition follows it.
  4. Pranapratishtha (invoking life): With folded hands, chant 3 times the Pranapratishtha mantra — this is the most important step that turns the murti into a living deity for the duration of the festival.
  5. Shodashopachara (16-fold service): Offer in order — asana, padya (water for feet), arghya, snanam (panchamrit + clean water bath, then re-wipe), vastra (cloth), yajnopavita, chandan, akshat, pushpa (hibiscus), 21 durva blades, dhoop, deep, naivedya — 21 modak, tambula (paan-supari), dakshina, pradakshina + namaskar.
  6. Ganesh Atharvashirsha or 108 names: Recite the Atharvashirsha once, or chant the Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 names of Ganesha). Families with children can do a simple 21x "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah."
  7. Aarti — "Sukhakarta Dukhaharta": Light the camphor, perform 4 vertical + 3 horizontal circles in front of the idol while singing the aarti. Conclude with the Mantrapushpanjali.
  8. Prasad distribution: Take the modak naivedya off the plate, distribute to all family members starting with the eldest. Touch the idol's feet, ask for forgiveness for any errors in the vidhi.

6. Daily puja routine during the festival

Morning (after bath, ~7:00–8:30 AM)

  • Light ghee diya & agarbatti.
  • Fresh flowers + fresh durva (3 blades minimum).
  • Naivedya: small modak / sugar / fresh fruit.
  • Chant 21x "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah", sing Sukhakarta Dukhaharta aarti.

Evening (~7:00–8:00 PM)

  • Light camphor for the evening aarti.
  • Offer kheer / payasa / laddoo.
  • Read 1 chapter of Ganesh Purana or chant Sankatnashana Stotra.
  • Family aarti together — "Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva".

7. 1.5 / 3 / 5 / 7 / 10-day puja — which to choose?

Duration Who traditionally chooses it Visarjan day in 2026
1.5 day (Dedh din) South Indian / Karnataka families, smaller flats, first-time observers Mon 15 Sep evening
3 day Working couples, Maharashtrian families with travel constraints Wed 16 Sep
5 day Most popular home Ganpati duration in Maharashtra & Bengaluru Marathi households Fri 18 Sep
7 day Joint families, those continuing ancestral kuldevta tradition Sun 20 Sep
10 day (Anant Chaturdashi) Public/society pandals, families with a centuries-old vow Wed 23 Sep 2026 — Anant Chaturdashi

How to decide: follow whatever your kul parampara (family tradition) has always done — once chosen, it should not be reduced. If your family has no prior tradition, start with 1.5 day and increase over the years as confidence grows. Never extend or shorten mid-festival without a priest's guidance.

8. A quick note on Modak preparation

Traditional ukadiche modak uses rice flour outer + grated coconut, jaggery, cardamom and a pinch of nutmeg inside, steamed for 10 minutes. Many Bengaluru families substitute with kozhukattai (Tamil), kadubu (Kannada) or fried modak (Marathi). Always offer in counts of 21 or multiples of 3. Place on a banana leaf or silver plate, never on plastic.

9. Visarjan Vidhi — the loving farewell (5 steps)

On the final day of your chosen duration, perform Uttarapuja (farewell puja) before visarjan. The mood is bittersweet but devotional — Ganesha leaves carrying your obstacles with him.

  1. Uttarapuja: One last full Shodashopachara — abhishek, fresh durva, flowers, modak, aarti. Apologise for any knowing or unknowing errors during the festival.
  2. Akshat & coin shifting: Place a handful of akshat and a small coin in front of the idol — symbolises "please return next year". Pack 5 modak and a small bag of rice for him to "carry on his journey".
  3. Move the idol: Lift the chowki (not the idol alone) and carry on the head or in cupped hands. Chant "Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya!" (Lord Ganesha, please come again early next year).
  4. Immersion: For eco-friendly clay idols, immerse in a clean bucket of water at home — the idol will dissolve in 4–24 hours. The resulting clay-water can be poured into your tulsi pot or garden soil (not the drain). For larger idols, use designated mobile visarjan tanks or kalyanis at Madiwala / Yediyur / Sankey lake.
  5. Closing: Wash the chowki, sprinkle gangajal at the puja sthal, light a final diya, distribute remaining prasad. Do not throw away the kalash water — pour it into a tulsi plant.

10. Do's & Don'ts during Ganesh Chaturthi

Do

  • Choose clay / shadu mitti idols only.
  • Offer fresh durva & hibiscus every morning.
  • Maintain brahmacharya & sattvic food during the festival.
  • Sing aarti as a family — let children participate.
  • Keep the puja sthal lit with at least one ghee diya at all times.

Don't

  • Don't buy PoP or chemical-painted idols.
  • Don't look at the moon on Chaturthi night (Mithya Dosha — chant Syamantak story if seen accidentally).
  • Don't offer tulsi to Ganesha (the only deity who refuses tulsi).
  • Don't shift or move the idol once installed until visarjan.
  • Don't immerse in dirty drains or polluted lakes — use civic authority tanks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the date and muhurat of Ganesh Chaturthi 2026?

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 falls on Sunday, 14 September 2026. The Chaturthi Tithi begins on the evening of 13 September and ends on the late evening of 14 September. The most auspicious window for installing the idol (Sthapana) is the Madhyahna Muhurat, approximately 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM IST, because Lord Ganesha is believed to have been born during midday. South Indian families in Bengaluru often also begin between 9:30 AM and 11:00 AM. Always cross-verify the exact tithi end-time for your city on authentic Hindu panchangam sources one day before. Avoid looking at the moon on the night of 14 September.

What is the complete samagri list for Ganesh Chaturthi?

The 15 essentials are: a clay Ganesha idol, wooden chowki + red/yellow cloth, 21 durva blades, 21 modak, hibiscus & marigold flowers, betel leaves & nuts, coconut and brass kalash with water + mango leaves, panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar), kumkum/turmeric/chandan, akshat (rice + turmeric), agarbatti and camphor, ghee diya with cotton wicks, naivedya thali with fruits and kheer, dakshina (coin/note on betel leaf), and mango toran & rangoli colours. A complete kit is available at Divine Hindu Store, Jayanagar.

How to do Ganesh visarjan at home?

For an eco-friendly clay idol, perform Uttarapuja (final puja) on the chosen visarjan day — offer fresh durva, hibiscus, modak and aarti, then apologise for any errors. Place akshat and a coin in front of the idol and pack 5 modak as his "travel prasad". Lift the chowki (not the idol alone), chant "Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya". Place the idol in a clean bucket of water at home — it will dissolve in 4 to 24 hours. Pour the resulting clay-water into a tulsi pot or garden, never the drain. Finally, wash the puja sthal, light a closing diya and distribute the last prasad.
