How to Wear Rudraksha: Rules, Mantra & Care
by Divine Hindu
Rudraksha is sacred, and wearing it with the right intention and care is believed to enhance its benefits. Here's a simple, practical guide to wearing, energising, and maintaining your Rudraksha.
(New to Rudraksha? Start with the complete guide.)
Who Can Wear Rudraksha?
Almost anyone — men, women, and children of any age, religion, or background can wear Rudraksha. The 5 Mukhi is universally safe and the best starting bead. For specific goals, choose your Mukhi by intention. (See the Mukhi guide.)
How to Wear It
- As a pendant: A single bead on a thread or chain, ideally touching the skin near the heart or throat.
- As a bracelet: Easy daily wear on either wrist.
- As a 108-bead mala: For japa (mantra chanting) and meditation. → 108-bead Rudraksha Mala
Rudraksha can be strung in red/black thread, silver, or gold — all are traditional.
Which Day to Start
Many begin on a Monday (Lord Shiva's day) or on an auspicious day like a festival, Pradosh, or Shivratri. For wealth beads, Friday (Goddess Lakshmi) is popular; for knowledge, Thursday. Start after a bath, in clean clothes, with a calm mind.
The Energising Mantra
Before first wearing, it's traditional to energise (prana pratishtha) the bead. A simple method:
- Hold the Rudraksha in clean hands and take a few deep breaths.
- Chant the universal mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" 9, 11, or 108 times.
- Each Mukhi also has its own beej mantra (e.g., 5 Mukhi: Om Hreem Namah) — you can chant it if you know it.
- Set a positive intention and wear it with gratitude.
(At Divine Hindu, you can also add an optional Siddhi / energising so your bead arrives prayer-ready.)
Do's and Don'ts
Do: - Wear it daily; the bond is believed to grow over time. - Keep it touching the skin where possible. - Chant or pray with it regularly.
Don't: - Share your personal Rudraksha with others once energised. - Wear it into situations that conflict with its sacred nature (some avoid wearing it to funerals or while consuming alcohol/non-veg, per personal tradition). - Let it stay dirty or damaged.
(These are traditional customs, not strict rules — follow what feels right for your practice.)
How to Care for Rudraksha
- Keep it clean & dry. Wipe gently; avoid prolonged soaking.
- Oil occasionally. Every few weeks, apply a little mustard, sesame, or coconut oil with a soft brush/cloth to nourish the bead and keep its lines clear.
- Avoid harsh chemicals — perfumes, sanitizers, detergents.
- Re-string if the thread frays; store in a clean pouch when not worn.
- Recharge occasionally by chanting or keeping it in your prayer space.
Wear Genuine, Energised Beads
The customs above matter most with authentic Rudraksha. Every bead at Divine Hindu is lab-certified, Nepal-origin, energised, and shipped free across India. (Verify authenticity: Original vs Fake Rudraksha.)
